Second Semester Mentoring

Second Wind: Reigniting Passion and Purpose in Teaching

Teaching is a marathon, not a sprint. There are moments in every educator’s journey when exhaustion sets in, motivation wanes, and challenges feel overwhelming. But just like a runner pushing past fatigue to find renewed strength, teachers can also experience a Second Wind—a powerful resurgence of energy, inspiration, and resilience.

In our teacher mentoring program, Second Wind serves as a guiding theme, reminding educators both new and seasoned that setbacks are not the end of the road but rather opportunities for renewal and growth. Through collaboration, reflection, and support, we want to help you to rediscover your passion for teaching, refine your instructional strategies, and help you navigate the evolving demands of the classroom.

Teaching can be both rewarding and challenging, and at times, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or off track. The blog provides some articles and videos designed to help you regain your motivation, refine your strategies, and reconnect with the passion that brought you into the profession. As you explore these resources, reflect on the strategies discussed and consider how they align with your current practices. What new approaches can you implement to keep students engaged and on task? How can you use reminders, redirections, and reflections more effectively? Take this opportunity to refresh your perspective, learn from others, and find inspiration to continue making a difference in your students’ lives.

  1. Everyday is a new day for students to learn and also you as an educator. The same way that challenges comes our way it comes the same way for our students. So what is the difference? The difference is that as adults we have learned how to address and overcome the situation that is in front of us. Students on the other hand has not lived life long enough to know how to handle that situation because it is new to them. When things get hard or difficult we have enough in our reserve tank to keep going and not give up. Sometimes it is best to go back to the beginning. The first day of class everyone was excited and eager and now only a few months left we can still bring that excitement back to the forefront. As a class we can revisit what our goals were for the year and see how close we have gotten to achieving that goal. Remind the students that in order to win the race you have to first get into the race. I use this quote with my students. "Nothing is impossible the word itself says I'm Possible". -Audrey Hepburn

  2. The Theme of Second Wind screams to me, almost instantly painting a picture of everything that still needs to be done to finish the school year strong. I often think about the things on my to-do list and appreciate the support of others who can relate to the challenges of this field. The things that motivate me the most are the inspiration I get from being around the youth and knowing that the things we, as educators, teach will ultimately impact the students in some way, shape, or form. For me, a second wind is the push I need. I do have the strength, I am powerful, and I am capable.
